Emergency Medicine Senior Physician

GENERAL SUMMARY: Olive View-UCLA Medical Center (OVMC), a public teaching hospital affiliated with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, invites applications for a Senior Physician to serve as Medical Director for our hospital’s Emergency Department. OVMC serves as a major teaching site for the UCLA Emergency Medicine residency. The Medical Director will work with the DEM Service Chief to oversee the operation of a 51-bed Emergency Department (ED) with approximately 70,000 annual visits. The Medical Director will also oversee departmental performance improvement, quality assurance, and compliance with regulatory and governmental metrics and mandates. 

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: 

• Primarily responsible for the day-to-day operation of the ED, focusing on timeliness, throughput, and environment of care, including collaboration with nursing, clerks, supply/stocking staff, laboratory, radiology, registration, and other ED-specific areas.  
• Reports directly to the Service Chief and identifies issues with other clinical departments, administration, or outside facilities for the Service Chief to address.  
• May be asked to serve in the Service Chief’s absence for appropriate tasks. 
• Specific responsibilities include: 
• Co-chair of the ED Operations Committee 
• Assist Service Chief in departmental Quality and Performance Improvement activities and reporting 
• Collaborate with departmental sepsis compliance leader to improve core metrics 
• Supervise ED nurse practitioners and assist them with issues related to clinical care 
• Liaison with nurses and clerks to resolve operational issues in ED 
• Attend ED Nursing Leadership and UPC meetings monthly 
• Ensure adequate stocking/supplies in collaboration with nursing and stocking personnel 
• Update and maintain departmental policies relevant to ED clinical operations 
• Other tasks and duties relevant to operations as assigned by the DEM service chief

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Graduate of an accredited School of Medicine or Osteopathy 
• Active Board Certification in Emergency Medicine 
• 10 or more years of experience in ED operations 
• Prior leadership experience and experience in quality improvement 
• Experience in supervising, mentoring, and educating residents and medical students 
• Academic accomplishments suitable for faculty appointment at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA
