Chair, Department of Psychiatry

Los Angeles County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (HUMC) invites applications for the position of Chair of Psychiatry. This pivotal role reports to the HUMC Chief Medical Officer and plays a crucial part in shaping the future of our clinical, educational, and academic missions within the integrated Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS). Our institution is embarking on an exciting new chapter, featuring a campus-wide transformation including the construction of a new hospital tower with a dedicated 36-bed mental health floor.



We seek a transformative leader with a deep understanding of the behavioral health needs of Los Angeles’ diverse safety net population. The ideal candidate will possess a strong clinical and academic background, proven leadership capabilities, and experience in navigating complex health delivery systems such as those across the DHS and Department of Mental Health (DMH). Responsibilities include recruiting and mentoring a diverse faculty dedicated to innovative, compassionate, and high-quality mental health care.



• Lead and Inspire: Direct a dynamic team of over 30 faculty members and 37 trainees in our fully accredited ACGME General Psychiatry program.
• Enhance Service Delivery: Manage a comprehensive range of Psychiatry services including two Inpatient Psychiatric Units, a pioneering Adolescent Psychiatric Emergency Room, an Adult Psychiatric Emergency Room, a robust Inpatient Consultation/Liaison Service, and a full scope Outpatient Service with multiple therapeutic modalities.
• Strategic Vision and Innovation: Craft and implement strategies to enhance mental health services with an emphasis on health equity.
• Collaborative Excellence: Foster strong interdisciplinary collaborations within HUMC, DHS, and DMH, a key partner in meeting mental health needs in the safety net.



• Medical degree from an accredited institution, board certification in Psychiatry; eligible for licensure in CA.
• At least three to five years of leadership experience in an academic medical center or large, complex health system with highly matrixed organizational structures.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and inspire across organizational boundaries.
• A strong record in quality improvement, strategic planning, and operational management.
• Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Eligibility for academic appointment at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Chair will hold an academic appointment as a Professor or Associate Professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Additionally, HUMC has a longstanding partnership with The Lundquist Institute, an independent non-profit 501c3 research institute providing access to state-of-the-art research facilities and resources. Compensation is provided by Los Angeles County, with an excellent benefits package, and by the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
