H. Claude Hudson Comprehensive Health Center

Optometry Job Description

SUMMARY:

Optometry is the backbone for basic eye care needs and screening within DHS, preserving the Ophthalmologists’ time to see more advanced disease and perform procedures and surgeries.

Optometrists also staff the DHS Teleretinal Reading Center, providing primary reads for the Teleretinal Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Program that allows for the provision of baseline retinopathy screening for diabetics in the primary care clinics.

Optometrists help to assist the Ophthalmologists by providing disease-based refraction services as well as low vision evaluations and rigid contact lens fittings, but the bulk of optometric practice in DHS is focused on chronic disease management such as monitoring of moderate diabetic retinopathy and early glaucoma, as well as primary eye care.  The benefits of increasing Optometric care in DHS include less patient waiting time through provider efficiencyand creation of increased capacity.

H. Claude Hudson Comprehensive Health Center is part of the Ambulatory Care Network and provides high-quality, culturally sensitive health care services to the community of South Los Angeles, since 1979.  For over four decades, H.
