Pediatric Hospitalist

POSITION INFORMATION:
Olive View-UCLA Medical Center (OVMC) is located in the Sylmar neighborhood of Los Angeles, California and serves much of the San Fernando and Antelope Valley community.  OVMC provides an array of primary and specialty care services in both an outpatient and inpatient capacity.  The center has 377 inpatient beds, a 30 bed isolation unit and 18 bed ICU, and an Inpatient Psychiatry Unit.  OVMC has an affiliation with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.  OVMC is committed to high quality care and is a national leader in clinical research. 

 Olive View-UCLA is recruiting a pediatric hospitalist to join the inpatient team in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Newborn Nursery, and Pediatric Ward. This is a full-time, benefitted position. The position provides the opportunity to join the UCLA faculty and engage in teaching and training of medical students and residents from UCLA programs.  The role will involve caring for neonates in the 14-bed OVMC Level III NICU, the Newborn Nursery, and the 8-bed Pediatric Ward.  Shifts will include nights and weekend coverage. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING: 

  • Complete comprehensive history and physical examinations for newborns and children in the inpatient setting. 
  • Attend deliveries and perform initial resuscitation of low- and high-risk newborns. 
  • Provide post-operative care to newborns and children. 
  • Round on infants and children in the NICU and Newborn Nursery; Complete orders and provide education in collaboration with the attending neonatologist.  
  • Round infants and children on the Pediatric Ward; Complete orders and provide education to children and families. 
  • Order diagnostic testing, including labs, imaging, and EKGs. 
  • Review diagnostic studies, formulate treatment plans, and take appropriate clinical action. 
  • Order blood products, fluid and electrolytes therapy, and other therapeutic modalities in compliance with hospital standardized procedures and protocols. 
  • Provide patients and family education regarding the plan of care and anticipated health outcomes during daily rounds or routine in-person and virtual meetings. 
  • Provide consultation to expecting mothers in anticipation of potential post-natal infant health needs. 
  • Complete timely history and physical documentations, daily progress notes, and discharge summaries in the medical records. 
  • Coordinate discharge planning of newborns and children and discharge education for caregivers. 
  • Arrange referrals to pediatric subspecialty providers or other multi-disciplinary professionals as appropriate. 
  • Perform NICU procedures, including insertion of umbilical venous and umbilical artery catheters, intubation, lumbar puncture, peripheral IV insertion, exchange transfusion. 
  • Full-time physicians are also encouraged to help participate in quality improvement and system improvement work to maximize the efficiency, value, impact, and positive patient experience of the care we deliver.  

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in pediatrics or internal medicine/pediatrics. 
  • Eligible for or possess a California state medical license in good standing as well as a DEA certificate. 
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and collaboration skills.
