Physician Specialist – Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

LOCATION: Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, 14445 Olive View Drive, Sylmar, CA 91342. The Medical Center is located in the city of Sylmar, which is a part of the San Fernando Valley. The population, as of 2009, is approximately 90,000 residents. The city’s neighboring cities are San Fernando and Santa Clarita. The Olive View hospital has been part of the neighborhood since 1920, when it initially served as a tuberculosis (TB) sanatorium.

GENERAL SUMMARY: Olive View-UCLA Medical Center (OVMC), a 337-bed public teaching hospital affiliated with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, is seeking a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician to join our clinical practice and launch an outpatient pain service. OVMC is a major training site for a multitude of Residency Programs affiliated with UCLA. The individual will lead a team to provide medical evaluation and treatment to patients with various complex chronic pain conditions. The position will provide comprehensive clinical care, including advanced interventional procedures, and will be expected to participate in educational, research, and administrative activities associated with their academic appointment and related area of expertise. Participation in quality improvement projects is required. The individual will receive a Health Sciences academic appointment in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and will be required to contribute to the academic mission (research, education, and/or develop clinical programs). Position is 90% clinical and 10% administrative.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Dedicated to providing the highest quality of care to patients with complex chronic pain conditions
  • Collaborate with other services across the hospital to provide a multidisciplinary approach for patients as needed
  • Provide care at High Desert Comprehensive Health Center one day a week (20% of work week)
  • Serve on hospital-wide administrative committee(s) as representative for pain services
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders and partners, including other ambulatory services, quality management, utilization management, nursing, and social work to optimize the patient’s experience
  • Participate in ongoing quality improvement efforts including assessing metrics of care and compliance with The Joint Commission standards
  • Participate in training residents, including weekly teaching sessions, inpatient rounds, and educational conferences
  • Support a positive and high-quality service-learning experience for trainees
  • Opportunity to build and develop further clinical programs for treatment of pain
  • Meet criteria for academic promotion (aligned with designated academic series)
  • Lead a diverse team to evaluate the patient’s pain, review medical history, current medication use, and other risk factors for pain management cases
  • Design a patient’s treatment plan based on practice specific protocols and evidenced-based guidelines
  • Maintaining detailed notes on patient treatment and ensure these are readily available to the referring practitioners
  • Create a positive motivational environment for patients and staff
  • Provide clear and timely communication for all patients answering questions regarding treatments, medical concerns
  • Provide pain e-Consults, occasional consultation service for inpatient services
  • Provide new patient consultations, follow-up visits and interventional procedures

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Expertise to perform interventional pain procedures including, but not be limited to:
  • Nerve Blocks, including SI joint injections, lumbar facet injections,
  • Peripheral joint injections
  • Interlaminar and transforaminal epidural injections
  • Medial branch blocks and facet injections
  • Radiofrequency ablations
  • Sympathetic blocks

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current California MD/DO License
  • Current DEA registration
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency program
  • Primary training and Board Certified/Board Eligible in PM&R
  • Training in anesthesiology, neurology, Internal Medicine, or Family Practice will be considered
  • Additional pain management fellowship training is highly desired
  • Experience in research and commitment to scholarship
  • Desire to serve a diverse, medically underserved population
  • Fluoroscopy license is highly desirable
  • Skills in medical pain management and basic interventional pain management; advanced interventional skills desired
  • Strong clinical credibility; patient-centered; perseverance in the face of challenges; desire to grow professionally; passion for teaching and research; integrity and clarity in all interactions
  • A valid California Class C License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed
