Chief of Anatomic Pathology, Section Head of GI and Liver Pathology (HUMC)

• Supervision of the operations of the Anatomic Pathology Division.
• Provision of accurate diagnoses and timely reporting of specimens received from surgery and/or other clinical services.
• Provision of consultations to clinical staff regarding the significance of pathological findings.
• Provision of daily case sign-out sessions for surgical pathology and cytology residents.
• Provision of general surgical pathology coverage on a rotational basis with other faculty, including autopsy and after hours frozen section diagnoses.
• Monitoring the standards and quality control of cytopathology preparations and stains.
• Provision of educational case sign-outs and programs, conferences, on a regular basis to pathology residents.
• Monitoring standards of performance, quality control, and quality improvement, including tests referred to outside laboratories, including reviewing all QC results at least monthly.
• Provision of education programs, planning, research, and development appropriate to the needs of the section.
• Consultation with laboratory’s clients about test quality and appropriate test ordering.
• Assurance that reports include all information required for test interpretation.
• Selection of test methodology appropriate for clinical use.
• Verification of the precision and accuracy of each test and test system.
• Maintenance of a CMS-approved proficiency-testing program commensurate with services offered.
• PT samples are tested in accordance with CLIA requirements.
• PT results are returned with the time frames established by the PT program.
• PT results are reviewed by appropriate staff and corrective action plans are followed when PT results are found to be unacceptable or unsatisfactory.
• Establishment of a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed.
• Establishment parameters for acceptable analytic performance and assurance that these levels are maintained throughout the testing process, from specimen receipt to result reporting.
• Remedial actions are taken and documented when significant deviations from the laboratory’s established performance characteristics are identified, and patient test results are reported only when the system is functioning properly. Ensuring that personnel have been appropriately trained and demonstrate competency prior to testing patient samples.
• Remedial training and / or continuing education is undertaken when personnel do not pass competency assessment. Documentation of retraining and post retraining competency assessment are completed prior to performing patient tests.
• Policies and procedures are established for monitoring personnel in all phases (preanalytic, analytic, and postanalytic) of testing to assure the on-going competency of all individuals who perform testing.
• Supervision and monitoring of the Histology laboratory including review of procedures and quality management, monitoring of IHC quality and controls, and assessing new IHC stains as needed.
